Psalm 19    Revelation Response

Introduction:  In our world today there is very little respect, honor, and fear of God.  People take God’s name in vain without even thinking about the person of who’s name they have used in such a derogatory, dirty, and despicable way.

Proposition:  We need a fresh view of who God is and a proper response to knowing Him.

Interrogatives:   Who is God?  How do we know him?
What should be our response to him?

Transition:  Psalm 19 has the answer to these questions and more. We can know God because

I.    God reveals himself through his Works (1-6).

A.        His creation speaks daily of his Glory (1-2)

B.         His creation speaks to all men throughout the world (3-6)

What has man done with this knowledge of God?  – Romans 1:18-23

II.  God reveals himself through his Word (7-8) .

A.        His Word is a wonderful gift because of it’s nature:

1.         Law is perfect

2.         Testimony is sure

3.         Statutes are right

4.         Commandments are pure

B.         His Word is a wonderful gift because of what it does:

1.         Converts the soul — Brings Salvation

2.         Makes wise the simple — Brings wisdom

3.         Rejoices the heart  — Brings joy

4.         Enlightens the eyes  — Brings discernment

III.  God’s revelation demands a response – Fear (9-14).

Define: “Fear of the Lord”:  Proverbs study- 1:7,29; 2:1-5; 3:7

A phrase of the O.T. meaning Reverential trust with hatred of evil

A.   Demonstrated in our desire for God’s Word (9-10)

B.   Demonstrated in our receiving the warnings of God’s Word (11)

C.  Demonstrated in our obeying God’s Word and receiving His rewards.(11)

D.  Demonstrated in our willingness to confess our sin (12) (1 John 1:9)

E.  Demonstrated in our praying for God’s help to have victory over sin (13)

F.  Demonstrated in our desire to please God with our mouth and heart. (14)

Conclusion:  The fear of the Lord was a characteristic of the 1st cent. Church (Acts 9:31) The fear of the LORD is what we need in our lives and churches today if we are to please God.
