August Pastor’s Chat
We have previously considered that there are some things we need to discard if we are to follow Christ alone, like pride and fear. We have also talked about some things we must put on, like love and prayerful trust. But for us to do these things consistently we need to be continuing the process of renewing our minds. This is exactly what Ephesians 4:22-24 teaches us: “That ye put off, concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness” (emphasis added). Did you notice that between the putting off and the putting on is the renewing of the mind? It is an absolute necessity if we are to grow in Christ.
So then, how do we renew the spirit of our minds? The renewing of our minds is the work of God through the Holy Spirit that begins at salvation (Titus 2:5). It continues as believers grow spiritually by humbly accepting what God has said in His Word and by choosing to order our thinking and actions according to Scripture and not according to our feelings, thoughts, and traditions (Phil. 2:5f, 4:6-8; Col.2:8). The Word of God is like water that washes the stains of false ideas and philosophies from our minds. Our minds need washing and this is what a relationship with Christ through the daily reading of the Word will accomplish. This is the Lord’s will for His church as a whole and each of us individually as Ephesians 5:26 teaches, “That He [Christ] might sanctify and cleanse it [Church] with the washing of water by the word.” We can only faithfully follow Christ alone as we allow Him to cleanse us with the Word of God.

Verses on Renewing our Minds
Romans 12:1-3 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”
Philippians 2:2 -5 “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
1 Peter 4:1 “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;”
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
I Corinthians 2:12-16 “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”
