God’s Word: The Means for Following Christ

September Pastor’s Chat

Last month we chatted about the absolute necessity of the renewing of our minds for true spiritual growth and saw that it was by the Word of God that our minds are cleansed and renewed. Renewal happens because the written Word of God— the Bible— reveals to us the living Word of God— Jesus Christ. Jesus’ work is a cleansing work!

Are you daily beholding the Lord in the Scriptures, as you have your quiet time with God? Or maybe we should ask, “Are you spending quality, focused time reading the Word of God, or do you need to reprioritize your daily schedule?” For truly the key to following Christ alone is keeping your eye on our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Keeping your eyes on someone can be difficult. If you have ever been asked to follow someone in another car to a destination in a big, unknown city, you know how hard it is to keep your eyes on the car in front of you. When there are lots of lights, traffic, and distractions you give your attention to keeping up with them, because you know if you lose sight of the car, you’re lost! In like manner, we easily get off God’s path when we get our eyes off the Lord. By the grace of God, we must do everything we can to not be distracted by the things of this world that would come between our Savior and us.

In Hebrews 12:1-2 we are challenged to lay aside sin, and to look “unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.” Verse 3 tells us how to do it, “For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.” If you find yourself weary and faint, it is a sure sign that you have not been considering the Lord. The cure is to meditate on Him. Open your Bible and consider the Lord Jesus, and He will give you grace!

With Prayer, Pastor Mark

1 Thessalonians 2:13 “ For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.”

2 Timothy 2:9 “Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.”

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Hebrews 11:3 “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

Revelation 19:12-13 “His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”
