Last year I had the privilege of preaching a Thanksgiving message from
Psalm 107 (Simple Outline from Psalm devotionals)

Title: Giving God Thanks Text: Psalm 107
Introduction: Are you a thankful person? God tells us to give thanks in everything – I Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” He also tells us to give thanks for all things – Ephesians 5:20, “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Proposition: The command to be thankful comes from both the New and Old Testament!
Transition: This morning we will consider a Psalm of Israel that calls us to give God thanks:
I. The request to give God thanks – “O give thanks unto the LORD” vs.1
II. The reasons to give God thanks:
A. Because of who He is – vs.1
1. God is Good – vs.1 – Illustrate – We often don’t realize God’s goodness to us until something is taken away from us. Example – use of a finger, loss of eyesight, etc.
2. God is merciful – vs.1 – Illustrate – Have you received the just consequences to your sin?
3. God is sovereign – vs.33 – 41
B. Because of what He does – vs.2
1. God redeems –vs.2
2. God delivers (saves) – vs.6, 13, 19, 28
3. God does wonderful works for men – vs.8, 15, 21, 31
III. Some situation in which to give God thanks:
A. When in need of daily provision – vs.4-9
B. When under God’s chastening – vs.10-16
“Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” Hebrews 12:11
C. When suffering from the consequences of sin – vs.17
D. When passing through a storm in your business – vs.23-32
IV. The result of giving God thanks:
A. You will experience true rejoicing – vs42
B. You will have gained true wisdom – vs.43
C. You will truly understand God’s lovingkindness – vs.43
Conclusion: Testimony: There are some difficult things for which I have had to learn to give thanks to God: The death of my grandpa Worden, before I was old enough to remember him, my Dad and Mom’s divorce when I was in the first grade, my wife’s health problems and loss of eye sight, the closing of my wife’s womb after our first child, the leaving of Brazil after a fruitful and blessed ministry, the difficulties in my relationship with certain individuals, the rejection of Christ by those whom I long to see saved. What about you, can you be thankful in the situations you find yourself right now? Can you be thankful for all the things that God has brought into your life? He has a sovereign purpose for each one!
