Material Possessions: Keeping God-honoring Attitudes

If we are to honor God with what He has entrusted to us, we must have Biblical attitudes toward all the many material blessings that He give us. The Bible challenges us to have the following attitudes toward material possessions:

1.      A pilgrim’s attitude: Heavenly values versus worldly values

1 Peter 1:17-18

1 Peter 2:11-12

Hebrews 11:13-16

Matt. 6:19-24

Define: Pilgrim -

Define: Sojourner -

2.     A steward’s attitude: Faithfulness versus irresponsibility

a.   Material things are gifts from God that demonstrate His love and His provision for our necessities:

Deuteronomy 8:16-18

Matthew 6:25-33

b.  We need to be faithful with everything that God gives to us, as illustrated in the following parables:

The faithful steward - Luke 12:42-48

The unfaithful steward – Luke 16:1-13

The incomplete tower – Luke 14:28-29

“Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”   I Corinthians 4:1-2

3.     A content attitude: Gratitude versus envy and covetousness

a.     A covetous attitude is condemned in Scripture:

Luke 12:15

I Timothy 6:9-10

Proverbs 30:8-9

b.      Contentment is reached when we realize that God has provided and will continue to provide for all of our needs:

1 Timothy 6:6-8

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Philippians 4:10-14

4.      A faith attitude: Prayer versus faintheartedness

a.    God will supply all of your needs – Trust Him.

Philippians 4:19

Matt. 6:31-33

Psalm 27:13-14

b.    Take hold of the promises of God through prayer and don’t worry.

5.      A work attitude: Labor versus laziness

a.      One who has the means to provide for his family and does not do so, “denies the faith ” by his actions:

I Timothy 5:8

b.     One needs to work so that he has excess to help those less fortunate:

Ephesians 4:28

c.    The lazy one is condemned to poverty:

Proverbs 6:6-11

Proverbs 19:15

Proverbs 20:4

II Thessalonians 3:10

6.      A God-centered attitude: God first versus me first

I Timothy 1:17

“Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” I Timothy 1:17
